Covert Engineers, Inc. was hired by a design-build contractor to provide the utility and process design for a new, brownfield distillery project in Portland, OR including milling, mashing, fermenting, stills, tank storage, blending, maturation / aging and bottling. Utilities included steam, chilled water, process hot / cold water and compressed air as well as HVAC / venting systems. CEITM also provided project management direction with respect to design management, team coordination and equipment tagging, drawing numbering, and document control procedures. Preliminary engineering was completed with deliverables for permitting including process flow diagrams with mass balance data, Process and Utility P&ID’s, general arrangement drawings with section / elevation views, piping specifications with routing drawings, and HVAC airflow schematic with a ventilation plan. Unfortunately, the permitting authority applied very high demands to the project and the client was unable to negotiate a path forward and the project was stopped in the preliminary engineering phase.
